Disaster Risk Reduction

ARUWYE, the Social Development Office plunged into the Disaster Risk Reduction activities by networking with different NGOs. Medical camps were seen as the immediate need to control the outbreak of diseases due to the floods. Therefore Medical camps were conducted in the flood affected areas of Jafarkhanpet, 3 schools in Tiruvottiyur, 2 schools in Chetpet and Fatima School, Kodambakkam. The medical team from Americares, Mumbai supported with their doctors and medicines. Madurai Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Meenakshi Mission Hospital, Thanjavur supported us with doctors, medical personnel and medicines. We were able to reach out to 2800 people.

Sr. Azarias Arokia Mary Selvi attended the meeting conducted for the NGOs to coordinate and plan disaster risk reduction activities. MACT an NGO involved in training people with PLAY BACK theater came out with an initiative to support us with trainings and performance in helping the victims through psycho-socio interventions. Sterling Play Back Theater team conducted a psycho-socio intervention session on 22nd December 2015 at Auxilium School, Chetpet for 60 flooded affected children. Children were helped to relive the disturbing situation and thus were assisted in being healed of those painful moments.

ARUWYE is now engaged in networking with NGOs involved in the Disaster Risk Reduction mission to help our young people and families with the apt measures to answer the need of the time. I thank Mother Provincial for guidance and support, the Animators and Headmistress of the communities that helped us in conducting the medical camps in their schools.
